Alderson's Miss Fireworks Pageant

Alderson 4th of July is one of the largest celebrations in the state of West Virginia....but they compete with Ripley for the "Largest Small Town 4th of July Celebration." So, when I was asked to emcee and sing at their queen's pageant, I was ecstatic to see how they host their pageant as well as what fun options they participate in during their 4th of July festivities.

When I walked into the community center I was blown away by the decorations for the pageant, the space, and the amount of townspeople that come to support this endeavor.

During the pageant I was able to serve as emcee alongside a well known TV correspondent and former meteorologist. For changing fillers, I also sang a few songs, one of which I used one of the boys from the boys choir that came to perform also, and one lucky young man in the audience as my "props." I was singing "Gonna Getcha Good," by Shania Twain and I had them sit in the chair while I sang out the song lyrics and "hammed it up" some.

Other than the director of the pageant and the contestants, the boys choir was my favorite. They were phenomenal performers and all were still in high school at Greenbrier East. One was going on to continue his education at Yale if that tells you anything about these guys and their abilities inside the choir room and outside.

All in all, it was a wonderful time spent with the contestants, director, boys choir and those at the family-owned motel that provided me a very comfortable night's stay in the heart of Alderson.

Artistry Event

Miss America became a partner with Amway Global who features products from the Artistry Skin Care and Cosmetics line. A friend from college had started a business through Amway and wanted to know if I would be willing to host a party. With the schedule I lead, a home party wasn't really possible, but an event would be. So together we started planning and decided on a date and location for the "Beauty Break by Artistry."

Some from out of state that are also associated with the business came to support this endeavor by the Pauleys and although we didn't have the turnout that we were hoping for, it was all worth it in the end. I was able to become closer with Mark and his wife Crystal as well as meet some other wonderful people that are also associated with Amway Global. So, in the end it was a win-win situation.

Electric 102.7

One of the things I wanted to do before my year concluded was to be on Electric 102.7's morning radio show. They have a HUGE audience and fan base, especially in the mornings, and there I wanted to be able to talk about my year as Miss WV, the Monarch Miss program, Miss WV pageant, and my platform.

So...my wish was granted and I spent time in the studio with Rusty Bumper, Coach Kid, and Libby Joe. Picture above are both Coach Kid(on left) and Rusty Bumper (on right).

Libby Joe, pictured in the yellow, is hosting a fairs and festivals pageant - Miss Kanawha County Fair - and I was asked at the Habitat for Humanity Slam Dunk 600 to come and speak to her contestants. But....prior to that she was able to have a guest host in the studio and she chose me!

Fairs and Festivals is where I started out and was privileged to hold the title of the State Fair Queen in 2007, now have been able to accomplish one of my biggest dreams inside and outside of pageantry, to be Miss West Virginia. You have to start somewhere and why not start with the Kanawha County Fair Pageant?

Marmet Elementary

Marmet, a town near my hometown and down the street from where I attended college, hosts a school with the BEST kids and BEST Mayor! I met Mayor Bill when I was working at the WV State Legislature as a Legislative Analyst for Senate Minority Leader, Don Caruth. He was my lunch buddy and served as one of the doormen. Both he and the others let me each lunch with them each day and that was the highlight of my time working at the State Capitol. So, after my school visit, I went over to the city building and was able to visit a few minutes with my old Capitol friend.

This school was close to one of the last and they always say "Save the Best for Last." I will never forget this school. When I walked in, I went straight to the office. Outside the children were lining up but the cafeteria wasn't cleared for them yet. So after a few minutes of waiting, they dropped to the floor and sat along the wall. When I walked out to run to the bathroom before the presentation, the kids were all looking up with their mouths open and fingers pointed at me. As soon as I reach the bathroom and went in, I heard a little girl go "OH MY GOSH! That was Miss West Virginia that just went into the bathroom." The kids went wild....all over me going to the bathroom!

From there we all gathered in to the cafeteria and I read a book to the K-2nd graders. Then after that we sang a song. They wanted to sing "The Climb", "Bad Romance", and "Baby" but when it came time for the volunteers to sing with me, they came up but wouldn't sing. So, needless to say it was a bunch of loud bad humming on my part.

Then the 3rd-5th grades came in and we did the normal presentation of overcoming obstacles and adversity to achieve your goals. This school was one of the most fun and will always be remembered!

Dunbar Kids Day

This appearance was unique because I got to be "Daddy's Little Girl." My dad has been a part of the Search & Rescue Dog Team for almost two years now. He has a bloodhound named Ellie May and has worked with and trained her to find missing people. So far, both Ellie and Dad have gone on a few trips and even retrieved an elderly man that had lost his way when walking around in the woods. After four days, he was still alive and well and didn't even have to have much done in the hospital other than fill him with some fluids.

The Dunbar Kids Day was put on by the Mayor of Dunbar. He wanted a day dedicated to each aspect of safety before the kids were let out for school. A participant on the Search and Rescue team is a great friend of the mayor and she was asked to have the dogs and their owner/trainer come an set up an exhibit as well.

Being that my dad wanted to have "Father-Daughter Day" as well as give me an opportunity to speak to the children in attendance on the topic of safety, he asked me to join him. All in all....I was Daddy's Girl....at least that day!

Mission WV Walk Me Home

The Walk Me Home event is put on by Mission WV, the non-profit organization I have been able to partner with this year. The goal for this event is to raise awareness of those children in foster care that are eligible for adoption, in hopes that those who participate will walk home with a child needing that "Forever Family."

There were about 50 people in attendance and various different non-profit organizations that are associated with Mission WV. In Morgantown, there is a Mission WV employee that has adopted at least three children, that I know of, and we all danced to Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus while the parents and other adults walked the track surrounding the Power Park Baseball Field.

Along with the DJ service, face painting, balloon animals, and tattoos were a huge hit!

There are currently 4,000 children within the West Virginia Foster Care System and 1,000 of those are eligible to be adopted TODAY! That Saturday alone, thousands of dollars were raised as well as the awareness of those awaiting children.

Doddridge County Schools

During my stint in Harrison County, I visited some of the surrounding county schools, Doddridge Middle and Elementary being two of them. The Elementary appearance was a more low key appearance than many other schools. I walked around to each 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms and talked about the importance of doing well on the WesTest.

After that school appearance concluded, I walked across the street to the Middle School where the entire gym was packed and waiting on me. As you can see from the picture below, there were a few boys that made a sign BY THEMSELVES out of printer paper and taped it all together so that it would stay up. I was flattered and impressed that they would go to such lengths, and honestly, for boys work....it was really neat and organized!

There we had a great time with the question and answer session and after the school counselor said it had been many years since they had had a Miss West Virginia visit their school. She was so impressed with my presentation as well was the Miss WV Scholarship Organization, she asked when they could have myself or the new Miss WV back to their school! So Rose...looks like we won't have to scramble to get Doddridge County back on the schedule for next year :)

Miss Ability Pageant

The Miss Ability pageant was started by a former Miss WV contestant during her years of involvement in the program. Dea Simpson had a passion for those individuals that were involved in the Stepping Stones program, a program for those individuals that need a little more special attention and guidance. She had worked as a volunteer at Stepping Stones for many years and a few years into her journey toward the Miss WV crown, she opened up a statewide pageant for those girls that longed to be on a pageant stage.

Much like the Miss America/Miss WV Organization, the Miss Ability contestants competed in personal interview, onstage interview, evening gown, and talent. I was there to help Dea and the others who had helped take over the pageant and encourage its growth. They had around 15-20 contestants competing in both the Miss and Teen pageants.

I had worked with "Viking Buddies" during high school and always enjoyed my time spent with, Brandon Milhoan, my buddy. So when I was asked to attend and help out with the Miss Ability contestants, I was ecstatic. My job was to encourage the girls, make them laugh, but more make sure their makeup, nails and hair was fit for a Queen.

Each girl was able to pick out her own makeup colors, as well as nail polish. There were many different helpers and former/current queens there to help the Miss Ability contestants.

These contestants are the sweetest girls I have ever met. They were helping each other out, asking one another what looked best, and encouraged each other after they finished or began their talent. They truly are special to each and every person they meet.

When it came time to practice their talent, I just cried. One girl did the ENTIRE Miley Cyrus "Welcome to the Hoe-Down" dance, complete with the pop it, lock it, twist it and drop it! Others sang, a few read a poem, but each were AMAZING! I just kept thinking...did I ever have that much confidence in myself, in who I was? I was so impressed and walked away from that pageant/experience a changed person.

Harrison Co. Schools

In the month of May, I spent 2.5 weeks in Harrison and surrounding counties. I had the best time staying with the Olivio family - Christian and Samantha are officially my favorite kids of the year! I visited 25 schools during my stay and was able to use some of the nicest technology.

During my stint, I was able to put my powerpoint and video presentation up on the BIG screen in school classrooms and auditoriums and run from the nice Mac database. That was kinda cool seeing your presentation on three different LCD screens all over the room while presenting. I also had a friend come and watch me at a few different schools and that helped when taking pictures.

As many the other schools requested, I presented a great deal on why testing is so important in preparation for the WesTest. There were a few schools I were able to stick to my standard platform presentation, but most of them had to be modified.

I would have more pictures of the students during my various different school visits, but Harrison County has one stipulation that applies to pictures on the internet: without a signed consent form from EVERY parent in the school, the student's picture is not allowed to be posted on the web. So, for this one, it is just me :)

Dancing with the Community Stars

Dancing with the Community Stars is an event that Miss WV hosts and participates in to raise awareness of the program and scholarship dollars for the contestants. This year there were six couples that took to the stage. Jackie Riggleman, Miss WV’s Outstanding Teen, is a dancer. She and her dad did the waltz and it looked like something off of Dancing with the Stars, but better! I attended the event, danced with the other contestants and had a great time catching up with Kayla Lynam, Miss WV 2008.

Mon County Baseball Association

West Mon Baseball Association was in need of a singer for the National Anthem and I was recruited. They were having a FULL DAY of championship playoff games ages 4-18. Pictured above is the "brains" behind the Baseball Association and Sheriff. Because of his many hats and status, I was escorted by the police! That is…for something good:)

WVU Blue & Gold Game

WVU Blue & Gold game is a practice game for those on the West Virginia Mountaineers Football team. This practice game is for the Mountie fans, but benefits Children’s Miracle Network and WVU Children’s Hospitals. The patients, brothers and sisters, family members of the patients and former patients are invited to go on the field and escort the WVU Mountaineer coach out before the game, then have an autograph session with Miss West Virginia.

Fairmont Safe Schools/Safe Home

I was already scheduled to be in the Morgantown area, so on the way I stopped by the Fairmont Safe Schools/Safe Home After School program. This program was extremely well organized and many vendors were there to assist those who attended the after school program.

I came to sign autographs of those in attendance because this after school event benefited child abuse and neglect. During the autograph signing, I asked a 13-year-old girl to take a few pictures and allowed her to go around the event taking more pics of the activity. As you can see, she took some of herself and told me they were so I would never forget her. I won’t...she is too much like me:)

The SHACK After School

The SHACK is an after school program in Morgantown, WV that is so unique. The interior of an old school building/gymnasium is completely painted in a forest scene. The kids there are from ages pre-K – 7^th grade. The staff was so cool and fun to be aroun, and I can see exactly why many kids enjoy coming to the SHACK for after school activities.

Each and every one of the kids signed an agreement that they were never going to drink, smoke, or do drugs. They signed and I signed.

Miss West Virginia Orientation

Miss West Virginia Orientation was like the Super Bowl, or even like Miss America for me! I always DREAMED of speaking as the reigning Miss WV to the contestants and parents about my experience and journey to the crown. Throughout my year and even my years of competing, I often thought of what I would say at orientation and wanted to make sure I got it all in, so I developed a few PowerPoint slides to keep me on track and focused.

This year, Miss West Virginia Orientation was held at The Greenbrier, a luxury resort in the southern part of West Virginia. The Greenbrier is known for its lavish décor, southern belle feel, five star dinners, events and amenities. Friday at 8:00 pm, I arrived to The Greenbrier after driving four hours from the extreme northern part of the state to the extreme southern part and spoke that evening to the contestants, parents, and local directors.

On Saturday, I had the wonderful opportunity to sing at the High Tea with The Greenbrier pianist. I provided three songs to the guests – Tale as Old as Time, Precious Lord, and Country Roads, and immensely enjoyed myself as I hoped those in attendance did as well.

Saturday evening finished up with the Miss WV Contestants vs. Greenbrier East Alumni basketball game. The girls were coached by Jerry West, former NBA Los Angeles Lakers basketball player, and the Alumni team was coached by Jim Justice, owner of The Greenbrier. Needless to say, the contestants did play a “fun” game, but hammed it up since they weren’t the most talented basketball players. Miss WV 2010 contestants won the game, and I was privileged to sing the National Anthem.

Once Sunday rolled around and we finished up all the informational sessions, I felt the weekend was everything and MORE than I had dreamed it would be.

Mineral Co. CASA Memorial Service

With April being National Child Abuse Awareness Month, the Mineral County CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, decided to have a memorial service to commemorate yet another year serving children in the county.

The Middle School Teal of Steel band was in full swing, providing some great music to visit and dance to, as well as filling the courthouse lawn with interested bystanders. I gave a short synopsis of how I got involved in CASA, why I chose child abuse and neglect as my platform, and what I have been able accomplish during my year that benefits the prevention of abuse and neglect.

After speaking, I went over to the day care group that had assembled on the courthouse lawn. After a few songs from the band, honorary CASA members raised the CASA flag in memory of those affected by child abuse and neglect.

Mineral County Schools

Mineral County is the home county to Miss West Virginia 2008, Kayla Lynam. So I reached out to her and her family and asked if I could "impose" and stay at their home for a night or two. Thankfully, they agreed with open arms, and after my first school, New Creek Elementary, I ventured to my new "home away from home."

Laura Lynam, Kayla’s mom, had MAJOR back surgery this past December. Kayla finished up her degree after her year as Miss WV and took the spring off from job hunting to serve as her mother's nurse. Now Kayla is living in Washington, DC and working for the US Navy as a Nuclear Propulsions Specialist! I am still scratching my head as to what she actually does because it is way above my head, but she loves where she lives and the position she is in, so that is all that matters.

After MUCH needed catching up, Laura and I went to Gabriel Brothers where I found a few "steals of the century." After more catching up, it was time to hit the bed and rise for another day of appearances and schools.

Jenna Hager Bush - Girls Scouts Event

Throughout life we are blessed to cross paths with wonderful, talented, giving people. Liz Raese is one of those people. I received a call from her and one of her extended business partners/friends about possibly attending the Black Diamond Council Girl Scouts event with guest speaker Jenna Bush Hager.

Many may know, but prior to Miss West Virginia, I worked for one year with the Bush administration and traveled with President and First Lady Laura Bush. During that time I never did get to actually meet Jenna or Barbara, so I jumped on the opportunity.

Jenna spoke openly about her experiences overseas and work with UNICEF. She related it to the encouragement of her parents to always be a person of service. Just like the Girls Scouts Black Diamond Council, Jenna and Barbara at a young age were using their talents to help serve others in need.

She was a wonderful speaker and not only was I able to enjoy the company of Liz Raese, but also a former Miss West Virginia and my boss, Executive Director of Miss WV, Leah Summers.

Final PASS Meeting

As I may have mentioned before, PASS, Partners in Assurance for Student Success, is the state organization that provides the funds for Miss WV to partake in a 100+ school tour during her year. In the beginning of her year, she meets with the PASS Board and discusses her platform and what she hopes to achieve through her school tour. At the end of the year, the PASS Board has Miss WV attend their last meeting before school is out to provide a recap of her school tour and year experiences.

Because I knew EXACTLY what I wanted out of my school tour, my first meeting with the PASS Board and its members was a piece of cake. Well…..my last meeting wasn’t. It became a realization to me that my year really was almost over, the school tour – the part I love the most – was almost over. So during my speech I was able to get through most of it, but when I provided the number of days I had left to be Miss WV, I started to cry. By the end of the emotional speech about my year being everything I wanted it to be, partly due to the PASS organization, everyone was crying, including Jack Wiseman, a seasoned veteran who serves as the President of the PASS Organization.

It has been everything I wanted it to be….I have no regrets, only fond, fond memories and experiences.

Froggy 99 Charity Basketball Game

Froggy 99, Country Radio Station, each year puts on a basketball game where the students of Ohio Valley College play the professors and the local Marine Corps play against the member of the radio station, all in hopes to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network.

I was asked to attend their game and mingle with the audience members. Autographs were signed, games were played, and surprisingly the Froggy 99 team had some great plays! They insisted they weren’t professionals, but they fooled me:)

Roane County Schools

Roane County is one of the counties adjacent from my home county. My dad grew up there and worked there as a lawyer and prosecutor, now serves as the Circuit Court Judge. Because of his "roots," the WV Black Walnut Festival was one of the "must" visits for our family each year. I wouldn't miss it for anything, and even though it might not have been my 'roots at first, Roane County/Spencer BECAME my roots!

In high school, I dated a guy pretty seriously (for High School, lol), so much time was spent there at ball games, dances, etc. In 2005, I was crowned Miss Black Walnut Festival and represented at the WV Association of Fairs & Festivals pageant where I placed 4th runner-up. So being in Roane County Schools for a week felt like "home" and was one of my requests during my year.

I started out the week at Reedy Elementary and finished up the week at Walton Middle School. Each presentation was a prep for the upcoming Westest, but for material interest and content, half of my Overcoming Adversity presentation was added on.

America's Ultimate Miss Pageant

In all my years of involvement in pageantry, I have never seen a director that is as dedicated and committed to his pageant and his queens as Mr. Kirk with the America's Ultimate Miss National Pageant. I was honored to be a part of his production which started on Friday and went until Sunday afternoon.

This pageant hosted preliminaries earlier in the year at which the contestants could win the opportunity to 1) Hold a title or 2) Go on to compete for an America's Ultimate Miss title. There were ten age groups from dollbaby to Mrs. and at least five contestant in each competition. In total, there were 92 contestants that competed for the various titles this weekend.

What amazed me the most was the 1) the organization of all 92 contestants, but 2) THE PRIZES! After EACH phase of competition each contestant was given a gift. These gifts ranged from a huge makeup set to a mini gumball machine, zuzu pets, etc. The winners got a flat Screen TV (went to High Point winner), Jewelry, Makeup, life size Mini Mouse doll, crowned queen piggy bank...and the list goes on and on. Honestly, I wanted to enter myself in the competition just for the prizes!

Saturday evening the reigning queens were escorted in a LIMO to The Dairy Mart for dinner, fellowship, and ice cream:) After that followed a dance party and autograph signing! The evening was a blast, but both Jackie Riggleman, Miss WV's Outstanding Teen, and I got to spend the evening with the NEW reigning Miss Virginia, China Helmendollar.

On Friday, the casual wear competition and (optional) disco wear competition took place. Saturday, (optional) fashion modeling, swimsuit, interview, and evening gown. Sunday the winners were announced and each age group was crowned.

Jackie & I got to spend some MUCH NEEDED time together which is always so enjoyable! Her mom was in attendance as well and the two of them together such a delight to be around. I am going to miss Jackie after our years conclude...guess I will just be driving up to Morgantown to see her~

[In Virginia, the trend is to have others sign your titled sash, instead of an autograph card. Interesting, but a definite keepsake that you will have forever!]

Kanawaha County After Schools

This week was full of after school programs. Because of the many snow storms that we had all over the state earlier in the year and testing around the corner, the school officials felt is most appropriate to invite Miss WV to the various different after school programs in Kanawha County. At each of these schools, I delivered the message of overcoming adversity, pursuing your dreams, never letting one thing define who you are.

I was offered a few teaching jobs once I was finished with my year. I was flattered, but I still haven't COMPLETELY figured out what I want to do yet. I am living each day to the fullest in my current job and then will worry about the future later:)

Grandview Elementary After School

I think when you are least looking out for God's involvement in your everyday life, He shows up. I was asked to come and speak to Grandview Elementary's after school program about making positive choices. After the presentation, as usual we did a short Q&A. The kids asked the normal questions about "What does it feel like to be Miss WV, "What is your favorite part," "Did you come in a limo," "What is Miss WV," etc. This time one of the teachers asked a question. She simply wanted to know where I was from, and I replied "Jackson County, about 30 minutes from here."

Later after I had concluded my presentation, she asked me if I knew the Kerseys, Ashley, Jim and Debbie. I replied, "Yes! I just love Ashley! How is Debbie doing?" We then talked for 30 minutes about Debbie's battle with cancer and how Ashley and Jim were taking it. I then asked her how she knew them. She teared up and said "I am Ashley's aunt and take care of their home when I am not at school." We both just sat in the cafeteria...with the kids running around...and got tears in our eyes.

I realized then, that God needed me to go to that school so I would see how good I had it, that I still had my mom around and will forever...I hope. That I didn't have family members that were battling with life-threatening diseases. That I had this wonderful job....my dream come true. I needed to see that there were others around me that were battling and I needed to reach out.

She, the wonderful teacher, was brought into my life for more than just a school presentation.

Glenwood Elementary School

Like Piedmont, I presented on overcoming adversity and pursuing your goals. I told a few more personal stories at this school and then it was time for the Q&A. This time the kids really weren't interested in knowing more about Miss WV, or the job. They wanted to hear me sing and see the swimsuit walk!

After about 10 questions and MUCH pestering, I agreed to sing them a few bars and then 'try' my swimsuit walk in flats. It wasn't that successful - in my mind - but they thought so! I got a standing ovation! Kids.....they are so easily amused and amazed, but honestly, I love it!

Piedmont Elementary School

Piedmont Elementary school was so mannerly. You could tell that the teachers, principal and staff kept a tight grip on the behavior of the students there. So much so, that after my 20 minute talk about overcoming adversity and pursuing your dreams, one of the girls asked me, "Miss WV....I don't want to offend you, but what is it like to be old?" I, along with all of the staff, busted out laughing, and I went on to answer the question, "Well honey, it isn't too bad being an adult, but when the bills come and need paid, I wish I was still in 3rd grade!"

Their welcome sign was so nice and made me feel welcomed...even if I was old enough to be that little girl's teacher:)

WV Bikers Rally

The Saturday before Easter, I spent the day in Harpers Ferry, WV at a WV Bikers Rally. This was a fun and interesting event that certainly opened my eyes to the biking world. I talked to the various different attendees and vendors that day about the different types, paint, engines, etc. of every bike you could imagine. With a rough estimate, I would guess there to be 500+ bikes there taking part in the fellowship. It was a beautiful, sunny, breezy day that was perfect for this kind of rally!

Jackson County Schools - Henry J. Kaiser & Gilmore

It felt so good to be in my hometown, in "my schools." I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Henry J. Kaiser Elementary in Ravenswood and Gilmore Elementary in Sandyville. Each school was so well behaved and so fun to be with.

Most of the time it is the Q&A afterward where you get the funny questions/statements, but not this time...it was the beginning of the presentation! There was a little boy that commented on my earrings. He said "I love your earrings! My mom wears ones like that too!" I laughed because of his observance, but took the compliment and felt like a queen from that moment on. The next little boy asked me to come over to him. He said he had a secret I leaned down and he asked me "Miss WV, where did you get your hat?" He was referring to my crown, and the boy beside of him elbowed him and said in the most serious voice, "That is a CROWN, not a HAT!" I just had to laugh, but it was like these kids had adult mannerisms....wonder where they get it from? lolololol

Anyway, being in my home county felt so good and comforting! There is just something about that feeling of home....

Slam Dunk 600: Habitat for Humanity

Habitat For Humanity of WV: Providing support to local affiliates with resources, training, awareness and advocacy. During the Slam Dunk 600 Charity Basketball Game, they made sure that statement rang true! They were raising money and awareness for the 600th Habitat House that was to be built in Jackson County - my home County~ This event went off without a hitch and you could tell MUCH preparation and time went into the planning and execution.

Mission Statement

I was privileged to sing the National Anthem and open up the evening's festivities. From there, the game was off and it was Team Habitat - made up of Celebrity volunteers - against the WV Blazers professional basketball team.

During the game they opened up the court to a younger boy that was selected out of the crowd to play with the Blazers. First, they put him through an "initiation" to make sure he was fit for the team, then let him loose on the court. If you look at the pictures you can see a little boy in a jersey that is as long as he is! Watch out ....he is fast and talented!

Mayor Carolyn Rader donated her time and was the dog mascot for the Blazers basketball team. She said that suit was as hot as a fiery furnace and she knew what Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego felt like now! She is a wonderful person that NEVER STOPS donating her time to her community.

Winfield STAND School Meeting

I am always asked "What is your favorite school that you have been to?" Honestly, I had a few different answers, but Winfield High School visit has been my favorite HIGH SCHOOL so far:) There was a new club starting up, and the two co-founders found me on the internet and called Rose, my appearance coordinator, and booked me for their second meeting.

Brittany and Sam, the club representatives, met me in the school office that afternoon. Because of their level of professionalism, I assumed they were seniors in high school, but after having the opportunity to go to school lunch....yes, school lunch....with them, I realized they were freshman. I was blown away!

Eating school lunch was my favorite! Winfield was having Easter Dinner that day at lunch so we all had turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, apple pie, chocolate milk and the SCHOOL ROLLS:) Let's just say that the school rolls were as SCRUMPTIOUS as I had remembered!

After meeting and greeting with a few of the other students that attended Winfield High School, we left to conduct the meeting. On our way to the library, both Brittany and Sam said "No one believed us that you were coming. So I am so glad that you came to lunch with us to show the whole school that we weren't lying and that we were famous enough to be your friend!" That made my day and I have continued to stay in touch with both of them (pictured below).

Lincoln High School GEAR UP

WV GEAR UP is a federally funded, six-year program aimed at Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. GEAR UP provides rigorous educational services to help students plan, apply and pay for education and training beyond high school. I had the wonderful opportunity to go into Lincoln High School in the Clarksburg area to talk to the students and parents partaking in the GEAR UP Challenge.

Being that this was not a "normal" school appearance with my platform speech ready, I talked about the importance of going on to further your education or obtain an apprenticeship or certificate that will qualify you for more jobs in your field. Also I talked about my work with election campaigns and how that lead me to my job with the White House and also the McCain campaign. Throughout those experiences and life lessons, much was learned: Goal Setting, Time Management, Making Wise Choices, Knowing Who You Are, and most importantly, What You Want to be Remembered For.

I relived my experience in high school serving as President for two large clubs, filling out the FAFSA, applying for college, applying for various scholarships, choosing my place of study, and picking a major. I got a few laughs about the FAFSA form and my parents wanting to kill me just because I was a senior and there was so much that went into that year. But again, to sum up the presentation, "Life isn't easy....but it's great!"

I am very satisfied with where I am in life right now, but I know I am here because of the hard work that was bestowed upon me, the support system I had at home and at school, and the push to set and achieve goals.

Morgantown Boys & Girls Club

Monday, I went to the Morgantown Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club to talk to the kids about overcoming adversity. This was my first Boys & Girls Club appearance of the year and I was so excited to see the kids and hear about what they did that day in school.

When I came in, the students were working on Power Hour (Power Hour is one hour Monday-Thursday where all members work on homework, study, or get tutored) so I just sat quietly and waited until everyone had finished their homework. There was a little girl that sat down by me on the couch and had a Barbie in her hand. I, jokingly, asked if her Barbie's name was Fred and she looked at me and said "Uhm, no, her name is Barbie!" I laughed just because of the seriousness, but then realized that kids have just as much ability to change their attitude and feelings as adults do:)

Power Hour was soon over so I was able to start my presentation. All of the kids gathered in the "couch room" and listened to the presentation while also asking questions. Early in the presentation I asked everyone what they thought a BAD CHOICE might be? One little girl responded, "Drugs." I thought "Yes, they are getting it quick." Next student responded, "Drinking." Strike two. Then....it got interesting. A little boy raised his hand and she said "Getting drunk on green tea!" We all laughed, but it wasn't as good as the ones to follow. The girl with the barbie said "Letting a six year old drive a car." I just had to laugh because I had YET to get that answer....but in actuality it was a great BAD CHOICE. And then the one to top it off was this little eight year old boy who started in on a whole story. "How about carrying a knife in your pocket to school, setting off the metal detectors, then running away when you got caught. Pulling the fire and water alarms and going to the local convenient store and stealing every Little Debbie cake they had there." The room erupted, as did I!

I learned then a very valuable lesson. When asking a question, be prepared for ANY answer! After laughing we all diverted and commented to the eight year old that he was in fact VERY RIGHT, those all would be bad choices and then went on to the rest of the presentation which went very well.

As I have mentioned before, I ALWAYS do a question and answer session after each school presentation. You get the usual questions of, "Where do you live," "How old are you," "Do you have any pets,", etc. but today there was a little boy that asked, "If there was a Mr. WV?" I jokingly said, "My boyfriend thinks he is Mr. WV, but I am not so sure about him. So, would you like to be my boyfriend for the day and reign as Mr. WV?" He said, "Uhm, no. That would be quite alright. I don't like playing with girls." AGAIN, the room erupted and I acted like I was crying. I said "You just threw me under the bus!" He replied, "Yes, I wish I could do that to my sister" and pointed to where she was.

After everything was asked and answered, I passed out my autograph cards to each student in the room. Mind you, that day I choose to wear my hair naturally curly and it has been cut since my picture was taken back earlier in my year. Once everyone had received one, the kids started looking at me funny and then back at the picture. In various different forms, they all said "This isn't you. You don't even look like this girl. You came in here and lied to us saying you were Miss WV!" I just had to laugh because they were right...I really didn't look like her, but after being ask to smile while the picture was neck to my face, they all agreed it was me:)

This was one of the most fun appearances yet and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of the Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club.

Miss Marion County Preliminary

This Saturday was spent at the LAST preliminary pageant for the Miss WV Scholarship Organization. The Miss Marion County preliminary pageant gave away three titles and those titles were awarded to one veteran and two brand new girls.

I explained to each of the contestants that I didn’t get to where I am today by winning each preliminary I participated in. I didn’t give up though and knew the end goal and what I wanted to gain from my experience in this organization. Each girl that competed this year holds a special place in my heart and I look forward to seeing each and every one of them compete again next year.

MHS Charity Talent Show

Morgantown High School hosted their second Annual Mohawk Idol. This is a fundraiser put on by the MHS Student Council and benefits the Mountaineer Spay and Neuter Assistance Program as well as WVU Children’s Hospital. I was asked to judge and couldn’t wait for the talent to start competing.

In the Elementary/Middle School division there were 10 contestants – ages first grade through seventh grade. In the High School division there were 12 contestants. Some played the piano, some the guitar, some sang solo, some sang with friends and there was even a JUGGLER!

Actually, this was one of the most, if not the most, entertaining and fun appearance I was asked to participate in. I was super stoked to be a part and thought the talent from both age groups was phenomenal!

In the Elementary/Middle Age division there was a little first grade boy that sang and played the guitar. Even though was the youngest participant, he WON! He is pictured below and was adorable.

When asked what he was going to do with his prize money of $100.00, he shrugged and said, “Probably put it in my wallet! I have $63 dollars already in there and I want to save it.” I was in love then and asked him to spare a few dollars and take me out for ice cream afterwards. He said he would if his sister could come along. I about snatched him up and took him home then!

In the High School division the winner of $100.00 as well was a girl who sang “Part of the World” by the Little Mermaid. I was a little skeptical when it started, just for the mere fact that this girl was a senior in high school singing a child’s song, but she was fantastic! She really sold it and that is what set her apart from the others.

Titleholder Gabriel Ash, Miss Doddridge County, was able to attend with me and we had a great time catching up!

Chestnut Mountain Ranch

Chestnut Mountain Ranch is a residential school program for children. Their admissions are based on an extensive intake process and the appropriateness of the child for the program.

West Virginia is like many areas of the country that needs a program that brings hope and healing to children, but West Virginia statistics for children at risk are higher than most states. Detailed statistics from the Child Welfare League of America and the Anne E. Casey Foundation provide proof for the need.

Chestnut Mountain Ranch is devoted to reaching these children to bring hope and healing. The program is based on a the time proven program of Eagle Ranch, and the success rate for these children developing into strong productive adults with healthy families of their own is great. The vision for Chestnut Mountain Ranch started years ago when Stephen Finn was a police officer in metro-Atlanta. Steve and his wife, Dawn, felt that one day they would work with at-risk youth on a full time basis. After 11+ years in law enforcement, Steve felt that God was calling him to serve full-time in ministry.

Through a series of events Steve and Dawn found out about Eagle Ranch, a boy's and girls home located in Georgia, and they soon found themselves leaving behind what was familiar and becoming full-time houseparents to seven troubled teens. During their time at Eagle Ranch, their vision for starting a children's home that would bring hope and healing to children in crisis began to grow. Through Eagle Ranch's guidance, they became equipped to take on this great task.

A thorough study was conducted of various states, and areas of need. During their time of research they found themselves in Steve's home state of West Virginia. They quickly found that the need was great for a children's home like Eagle Ranch. Chestnut Mountain Ranch got its name from Eagle Ranch's hometown of Chestnut Mountain, Georgia.

This week there was a college group in representing Habitat for Humanity that worked on or around the ranch this entire week. They were a group of 15 young adults that were lead by the gentleman pictured below. I had a wonderful time visiting with them and also catching up with Steve Flinn and his family around their dinner table.

Many Miss WV titleholders got to school or live in Morgantown. Two titleholders, Maggie Power & Megan Otte were able to join me at the Mountainview Middle School appearance. The boy to the FAR RIGHT asked me what he looked like in the picture since he was cracking his back. We all got such a laugh out of it that he made me put it on the blog.

Due to the MANY snow storms that have occurred here in WV this winter season, my school tour has reached out to every school program imaginable to fulfill the required amount of schools....and keep busy. So this week in Morgantown I visited seven after school programs. I started out my week at Brookhaven Elementary and finished up at Suncrest Primary School. In between, appearance locations consisted of Mountainview Middle, North Elementary, Skyview Elementary, and Cheat Lake Elementary. Because of these appearances being with the various after school programs, each day offered something different; which I loved!

WV Bow Hunters Association Dinner

The WV Bow Hunters Association Awards Banquet is an annual appearance for the Miss Kanawha Valley Scholarship Organizations titleholders. Well, since I was a FORMER titleholder and Miss WV was an attendee to the event last year, I was able again to help out with the festivities.

(He wanted to make sure that we got his leg raise in the picture, lololol Great guys.)

Altogether we had four girls that were to help out with the various games and raise funds for the association. The girls in attendance were: Misty McMinn, Mrs. WV International, Emily Shaffer, Miss Appalachia, Jessica Keefer, Miss Coal Valley, and myself.

The hunters would come in the door and encouraged to purchase a mug of tickets off of the beautiful titleholders. From there, they would tear off the tickets and place their numbers into the various different buckets that would give them the opportunity to win that certain prize. These prizes could run from a flashlight to a target deer or 18-person tent.

(This little boy was DARLING! I had to take a picture of him...he was kinda afraid of me though.)

Each titleholder was in charge of one game and these games were run somewhat the same way as the bucket/ticketed items. My game offered the chance to win a Yorkiepoo puppy or a gun. The interested hunter would pay $10 for a chance to win either item and would get either 2, 4, or 6 tickets, qualifying them for that many chances at a win.

Honestly, I fell in love with the dog and paid more attention to it than I did the game and the hunters. Good thing I had someone else helping me take the money and hand out the number of tickets drawn! After it was all said and done, the association made $1500 on my dog game and much more on the other games offered at the dinner.

The best way to describe this appearance was to consider yourself a “glorified hunting Vania White.” Each of the titleholders had a great time helping raise funds for the association as well as being together.

(Yes, this is called....only bringing with you what you need for that day or the next day. I did go to the gas station for snacks with the girls in this 'get-up.' I had those shoes from my outfit that I arrived in. The sweat outfit was something I brought for hanging out, but didn't bring shoes. And lastly, that is my winter coat. I am not at all going to be on the 'fashion emergency' section of the next Star News!)

Geneva Kent & Culloden Elementary Schools

Much like Enslow Middle School, GenevaKent and Culloden Elementary Schools were wonderful schools to attend and present. At Geneva Kent I did my normal Child Abuse & Neglect presentation, but at Culloden I talked to the fourth and fifth grades about overcoming adversity. I loved talking to the older grades because the question and answer portion is always much more interesting. You just never know what they are going to ask and how serious of a question it could be.

Queen at Outback Steakhouse

Throughout my year, I have been able to meet the most wonderful people that, honestly, I would have never crossed paths with without the title of Miss West Virginia. After finishing up a day in Cabell County Schools, I was privileged to eat dinner with a wonderful family at Outback Steakhouse.

We all had a blast, but Heidi (five year old little girl) was ecstatic to eat dinner with Miss West Virginia, so I surprised her by brining my crown, sash, and some clip on earrings that I found in the crown box. She came dressed head to toe in Hello Kitty and even brought her own crown that she wears around the house. Her brother seemed less than amused and was more interested in the cheese fries, but we didn’t care. We had fun and she wore my crown and earrings during the whole dinner!

I look forward to seeing them again, but the next time, I think I will be getting my fashion advice from Little Miss Heidi:)

Enslow Middle School

Enslow Middle School was a BLAST to present to! I did three presentations – one to all three grades – and each grade was vastly different with their responses to the presentation as well as questions during the interview portion.

These students were quality level students and were so easy to present to and interact with. They were all ecstatic to get an autograph picture and I was excited to give each of them one as well!

Soon after I finished my presentations, I headed down to Huntington’s Pullman Square and did a little damage at Runway Couture!

Monarch Misses - LouMasi & Mom

In 2006, the Monarch Miss Mentoring program was added to the Miss West Virginia Scholarship Organization. With some help from a former Miss West Virginia’s Outstanding Teen and now current competitor for Miss West Virginia, Jessica Schuler, and other Miss America State Organizations, we in WV were finally a part of the mentoring opportunities associated with Miss America.

This past year I was assigned to two Monarch Misses, Evie Thorn and Danielle Jolliffe. Danielle and I have been able to stay in touch because of her mom – the manager of the State Fair of West Virginia – but Evie and I haven’t gotten to get together this year. I hope if there is a "next time" I get to visit Petersburg, I will be able to connect with her. She is a great girl…just growing up and dealing with the day to day busy lifestyle.

I have had the blessing this year to have adopted LouMasi Lott as my Monarch Miss. She and her mom found me and have been such a support. Her mom recently wrote me a facebook message about Masi singing EVERY WORD of my Precious Lord, Miss America talent song, to her doll “Baby Talia.” I guess you never realize how you affect little girls or how much they remember until you are hit in the face with the reality that it is not just a MYTH….they really do look up to you!

After the bridal show in Parkersburg, I had a few hours to spend with both her and her mom at Applebee’s and I can’t wait till the next time we can get together. They both are WONDERFUL people and women I look forward to spending a lifetime getting to know!

Elizabeth Michael's Bridal Show

Just a few days before the bridal show was to take place, I was asked to be a model for two gowns that were needing to be showcased. I agreed since Jane/Elizabeth Michael’s has done so much for me!

Elizabeth Michaels is located in Vienna, WV and is a ONE-STOP-SHOP for all pageantry/prom/bridal needs as well as just spicing up your wardrobe with a few statement pieces. Many of you readers hear me refer to Elizabeth Michael’s as "Jane’s" and that is because it is owned and operated by Jane Engleke of Mineral Wells. She outfitted me for Miss West Virginia Fairs & Festivals in 2007 when I won, Miss West Virginia 2008 and Miss West Virginia 2009. Not to mention, my FABULOUS wardrobe at Miss America!

She has been a great friend of mine, pageant helper, and fashion police. Not to mention she is a WONDERFUL sponsor to many of the WV Preliminaries and the Miss West Virginia Scholarship Organization.

KVSO Children's Pageant

As mentioned in an earlier blog post, I wore both the KVSO preliminary titles when competing for Miss West Virginia. Now it came time for a fundraiser and I was honored to serve as the emcee for the area children’s pageant.

There were close to 30 participants, ages from baby to Pre-Teen Miss. Each contestant was awarded a princess prize box along with a crown, sash and gift bag to the winners of each age group and category.

It was a fun day and a great time to visit with the newly crowned Miss Kanawha Valley Scholarship titleholders who also helped out with the fundraiser as well.

IHOP National Pancake Day

Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has raised more than $3.25 million to support charities in the communities in which it operates. While IHOP's National Pancake Day typically takes place on Shrove Tuesday, this year the company will host its free pancake event on Tuesday, February 23, extending the fundraising window by one week to maximize donations for Children's Miracle Network. With your help, we hope to raise $5 million in five years for Children's Miracle Network and other local charities through your donations in 2010!

Known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products...hence the name Pancake Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday.

I was privileged to host at the IHOP in Beckley, WV, right off of Harper Road. There I spent a few hours with the guests that came in to support the day and it cause. I even reconnected with someone that I worked with a few years back when on the McCain campaign (see picture above). Other Miss America and "Miss State" contestants also partook in the day by offering up a few hours of their time to flip flapjacks or visit with the guests of IHOP. A few Miss West Virginia contestants had pictures posted of their experience and I stole those to show with you. You will see below.

When sitting down with the guests, I stuck up a conversation about almost anything. An older woman and her "daughter-in-law to be" were eating their breakfast meal and she told me she was a pastor of a church in Beckley. We started talking about our faith and our church experiences. Always when you need a pick-me-up, God is there. Everyone and everything else fades, but He remains ever present!

Miss Kanawha Valley Preliminary

The Miss America Organization provides personal and professional opportunities for young women and opportunities to promote their voices in culture, politics, and their communities. The program provides a forum for today's young women to express their viewpoints, talents, and accomplishments to audiences.

The Miss Kanawha Valley Scholarship Organization follows the same values as it gives West Virginia residents the opportunity to compete for Miss West Virginia under the Miss America Scholarship program. This pageant is near and dear to my heart because I held both the Miss Kanawha Valley title and the Miss Capital City title. I had two wonderful years to work with head pageant director, Misty McMinn, after competing with her my first year in the system. She is a wonderful woman and director along with the other directors that put on this regional preliminary.

There were 16 contestants that competed for 8 titles – six were given by KVSO and two were given by the Miss Southern West Virginia preliminary. The winners are as follows:

Mary Engles Elementary School

Mary Engles Elementary was one of my favorites! Up until my visit, I had only had one other school be prepared and ready for me to come in with my powerpoint/video presentation. The school staff were wonderful and I can see why the kids were as well. They were so well behaved and mannerly!

The whole school was in the presentation and we all convened in the gym. After the presentation I did a 20 minute question and answer session. Those are always a blast!

Women's and Children's Day at the Capitol

Women’s Day at the Capital is an annual event hosted by Senator Donna Boley. This day offers a chance for all republican women to get together, catch up, and offer their support to the upcoming candidates in the various political races. We had visits from various candidates and Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito even dropped by for lunch!

February 17^th is dedicated solely to children at the WV State Legislature. This year there were various speakers including myself and First Lady, Gail Manchin, who provided a insight from the field of child advocacy to the legislative members and those in attendance. A YouTube forum was added to this special day. Throughout the state children were filmed posing questions to the legislative members who were on the YouTube panel. This was a really cool, interactive, and audiovisual perspective to how kids think and how they perceive the legislative body and their role in society.

Flinn Elementary

I visited Flinn Elementary on February 12, just a few days before Valentine’s Day, so the kids were in full swing and awaiting the Valentine’s Day parties that were soon to be had.

Monday of last week, I got a call at 2:00 pm to speak to the House Health & Human Resources Committee on my legislative agenda, platform, and things that as Miss West Virginia I felt could be amended or added in order to make WV a safe place for children to grow up. The only catch was they wanted me in Charleston, 45 minutes away from home, by 4:00 pm. Even though it was 2:00 pm in the afternoon I was still on the Miss America schedule and had not yet taken a shower! YIKES!

After showering in .2 seconds, blowing dry my hair, putting the curlers in, throwing on a "stylish suit’"and running out the door with makeup in hand, I jumped in the car on my way to Charleston to present. While doing my makeup in the car and driving at the same time (hope the cops aren't reading this) I tried to wrap my mind around a way to EFFECTIVELY convey my legislative agenda. Arriving to the Capitol 10 minutes early, I ran to the nearest bathroom in my flats, teased my hair (like every pageant girl), put on my heels and walked out like I had been ready all day….just waiting on a call:)

Before presenting, I was able to see many of my old legislative friends. In college and upon graduation, I was able to serve at the WV State Legislature for two consecutive sessions as an legislative analyst and intern. Tiffany Lawrence, former Miss West Virginia, now serves her county as an elected official to the House of Delegates. She and her fiancé were both in attendance, as well as many of the other legislators and lobbyists I had had the privilege of knowing.

For the rush of getting there and getting ready, the presentation went surprisingly well and I was asked to present to the Senate Health & Human Resources Committee members last week as well. Currently, with the help of Delegate Mitch Carmichael, a bill is being drafted proposing that social workers in the State of West Virginia be given a $5,000 raise. With there being 400 workers in total, that equals out to about $2,000,000, but hey, when a turnpike toll worker taking $2.00 makes more than someone protecting our children, what is $2,000,000 when our future is at stake?

This coming week, I will be spending each and every day getting other lawmakers to sign onto the bill and working it so that it pass through both the House and Senate committees and the floor.

Queen for a Day!

After returning home from Las Vegas I was graced with the opportunity to spend the afternoon with a four-year-old little girl at CAMC. She had just finished up with a procedure and we were able to get together and have a few hours of “girl time.” We painted nails, did makeovers on each other, and ate our favorite candy...Chewy Sprees:)

We all know the feeling from dressing up, putting on a little lipstick or wearing our favorite outfit. As a college student, I would dress up for exams because I carried myself differently "fixed up." It was easier to focus and I felt more energetic. That's the concept of QFAD - giving a little pick-me-up to kids in treatment for cancer. QFAD isn't about looking good. It's about feeling good.

Queen for a day is done all over the United States through personal visits and group parties where makeovers, crafts, manicures, games, temporary tattoos and entertainers are all a part. Girls receive boas and tiaras donated by beauty queens; boys receive fireman hats and a badge. The little girl that I spent the day with reminded me of HOPE. No matter the situation she was in, she laughed and smiled and was so excited to go to the Mexican restaurant for chips and cheese that afternoon. I could tell that her parents loved her like no one else and soaked up each minute they were able to spend with their precious, happy-go-lucky daughter.

Misty McMinn: Local Director, Hair & Makeup Artist for Miss America, and Best Friend.

Misty Quick McMinn is known to many as Mrs. WV International, Local Director, Pageant Guru, former contestant, best Mrs. WV EVER, confidant and pageant acquaintance, but to me….she is Best Friend! She was gracious enough to do my hair and makeup for Miss America, but that is not where our journey together started.

(First year at Miss West Virginia)

My first year at Miss WV she was a fellow contestant. After devoting many years of her life to the Miss WV Scholarship Organization she decided to forgo being a contestant and become a local director. I competed in her first local and then was her queen her third and fourth year as the Miss Kanawha Valley Scholarship Organization Director. In her short time of serving as a local director, she has had two miss West Virginias and other top placements.

Throughout the years of helping me with pageantry, being my local director, and hair and makeup artist….she has also served as a confidant, homemaker (I stay with her a good bit), someone to laugh with, but someone who I can trust with anything and has helped mold me into who I am today. She, along with the Miss WV Board and my family, was the one who pushed me in my preparation for Miss America and Miss West Virginia.

(Yes, that is edible gold printed Bally's. Better be for the price of the buffet, but it was SO WORTH IT!)

She always gives good advice, provides a laugh...and the truth, and is someone I will forever be amazed by! So lucky to have her in my life….

Miss America 2010

Thursday:

After almost missing my connecting flight to Vegas due to delays on the tarmac, I touched down at approximately 2:00 pm Vegas time and had to rush to get my bags and get Planet Hollywood for the opening ceremonies photo shoot. Miss Idaho, Kara Jackson, had already arrived and was waiting on me to head to the hotel. After bags were grabbed, we jumped in the limo and we were off. During the ride from the airport to the hotel, both she and I talked about how surreal it was to be at Miss America as a Miss America contestant!

After arriving to the hotel, I had to run to the business center to pick up my boxes that I had shipped (absolutely the way to do it) along with lug my three suitcases. When I arrived to my room, I was ecstatic that my roommate was Miss Washington, Devanni. She was so fun during the time in Orlando and I was glad to get the opportunity to spend more time with her.

All the contestants convened down at one of the ballrooms to line up and be introduced at the Arrival Ceremony; then following the ceremony and interviews, we had a kickoff meeting and dinner where we were able to talk more in-depth about America’s Choice, CMN and the Miss America partnership and the new sponsors that came on board with Miss America.

Once the kickoff meeting had concluded and pictures had been taken, we were released to go back to our rooms. Both Devanni and I were neat freaks, so we spent a few hours organizing and preparing ourselves for the next day.

The Spice Market Buffet in the Planet Hollywood hotel provided the contestants breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. After our meal we were all introduced to the production team and choreographers and started rehearsing.

I am not a dancer…but by the end of the day I was able to pick up on the dance number a slight bit…at least enough to where I wasn’t embarrassing myself. That evening we went to the Venetian to ride the gondola rides and for photo ops.

By then my designated best friend was Taylor Treat, Miss Oklahoma, and we spent all of our free time together at the events and during rehearsals. She is a goon just like me and -- well, we are about the same person.... :)

The days were filled with rehearsals, but each evening was filled with a different event. Whether it be going to see Phantom, eating at Bucca di Beppo, Poll Position Raceway, CMN Breakfast, etc. there was always something planned.

Tuesday night was the first night of preliminary and I had talent. I was number one in the Alpha group and then had the rest of the evening to relax! I sang “Precious Lord” and you can see the YouTube video by clicking on the link below:

Wednesday, I participated in onstage interview. Thursday, Swimsuit and evening gown.

Each night after the preliminaries, the contestants were able to see their families and friends. That was a short-lived visit but better than nothing!

During the end of the week all of the contestants were exhausted and run down, but I guess I especially was. Friday, we had the “day off” from competition but had 5:00 am radio and TV appearances, rehearsal and Evening of Dreams event with those wanting to spend the evening with Miss America and the Miss America contestants.

I, however, was not able to attend that event. I had been worn out…so much so that each time we got a break, I was passed out asleep and even slept a slight bit standing up. I was not feeling well and that continued into Saturday. After a visit to the emergency room, prescriptions, IV’s, and some “mom time,” I was cleared to participate in the final night of competition. Whoever knew that once you FINALLY made it to Miss America that you would be "sick as a dog?"

Unfortunately, I did not make it into the top 15 at Miss America, but I know in my mind and in my families/supporters’ I was top 15 in their book! Now, glad to be back home being Miss WV, lobbying the State Legislature and participating in the other scheduled appearances. It never stops…but the experiences in life are what make up the memories.

Miss America Send Off Party

Mason County Family Christmas

Each year, Mason County offers the Christmas for Kids afternoon craft event. Each business is represented and provides their own crafts and other supplies for each child to take part in making. With all the crafts to choose from, I started with a group of children at the beaded candy cane table, then moved to the cellophane Christmas tree decorating and from there decorated some Christmas cards for family and friends.

There were close to 150 children in attendance and each went home with at least an average of five crafts/gifts, hot chocolate, and cookies.

This free event is open to the general public and encourages families to participate together during the Holiday Season. Counties like Mason serve as the trailblazer for many others. Their well-known mission and first priority is their children, their safety and well being.

Dale Carnegie Training

In 2002, Dale Carnegie celebrated its 90^th anniversary in 2002. With over 7 million graduates, Dale Carnegie Training is dedicated to serving the business and professional community worldwide. Currently there are over 2,700 professional instructors that offer Dale Carnegie Training in more than 75 countries in 25 languages. If those facts do not speak for themselves, I am not sure what does.

The Dale Carnegie Trainging Organization sponsors the Miss America contestants during their year of service. I was able to attend the “High Impact Presentations” course in Atlanta, GA and gained much knowledge about myself and my presentations skills.

During this course you are video taped seven different times, giving seven different presentations. Your first presentation starts out with just introducing yourself, stating what organization or company you represent, how many presentations you do on a yearly average, and why this training program is important to you and your growth as a presenter. The last presentation is on any topic, but is promoting the creation of change, whether that be change within your position and what you cold do to expand that job, or change within your organization.

There were eight people in this particular training course and their background ranged from a Marketing/PR person for a local hospital, to a plant manager/engineer, to a woman who currently worked for the Centers for Disease Control. Myself and the entire class became very close with our trainers – Ercell & April. They were the best in the business and it was no wonder that they loved their job. You could see it all over their face and in their presentation.

This was an invaluable experience for me and I gained much, whether that was more impacting presentations skills or relationship with others that I would have never had the opportunity to meet. I would recommend this course, but Dale Carnegie Training, to anyone hoping to positively advance within their career and life.

Inwood Christmas Banquet & Parade

Inwood, WV – near Martinsburg, WV – always throws the best parties and offers the best parades to watch. This Christmas they were hosting their annual South Berkeley Christmas Banquet and Parade and I was invited to participate.

The banquet was held on Saturday night and honored one particular man and others that have supported and given back to their community in one way or another. Featured was an honorary student, citizen, mayor, sports marshal, invited guests, and also featured were the king and queen who were selected by essay submission. Throughout the banquet the various different honorary attendees spoke for 5-10 minutes.

Throughout each speech I became in awe of how much time and preparation had gone into starting the Christmas parade years ago and how each year they keep getting bigger and bigger. The Rutherfords are to thank for the past few years of organization and promotion of the South Berkeley County Christmas parade.

There were 178 entries in Sunday’s parade, even with the temperature measuring 34 degrees. Hot coco was served during the parade route by a local church and man it was good! I was number 66 and was provided a restored jeep convertible! My driver was such a blast to be around. He was 60+ and owned a Hummer vehicle. He said when they came out, he couldn’t wait to get one, but had to spend two years researching, checking them out, and most importantly – convincing his wife! I hope the next time I am in the South Berkeley both his family and myself and take another ride in that beautiful jeep!

Wellsburg CASA Holiday Open House

On another trip to Wellsburg I visited the CASA Holiday Open House, held in the Wellsburg CASA Offices. This was a nice get-together for the volunteers and CASA staff, as well as the general public. There were 10+ vendors that were showing and selling their inventory for Christmas presents. The items on display ranged from Pampered Chef to fashion jewelry. There was a silent auction as well that featured a children’s basked full of various different items, men’s basked, women’s basket, Pampered Chef baking pan, and an overnight stay at a resort nearby. I ended up winning the children’s basket and plan to auction it off at the Miss West Virginia Scholarship Pageant silent auction in June.

I was able to get to know the volunteers and Executive Director, Michelle Bush, on a more personal level as we shared stories from the past and talked about the need for CASA and how each area in West Virginia was somehow affected by child abuse and neglect. The volunteers, staff members and interns were all so fun to be around. I met a new girl there that was participating in the VISA government program at Bethany College and volunteering with CASA as well. She has such a kind spirit that I would have stayed there all night to visit. The interns were also special ladies. They too attended Bethany College and we majoring in social work. The looked forward to serving as CASA volunteers while finishing college, but longed to serve as Child Protective Service Workers.

The Wellsburg CASA has served 120+ children throughout 10 years of service. Right now they have 40 children that they are advocating for and have 14 on a waiting list. That tells you what kind of epidemic we are in and why CASA volunteers are so appreciated and needed here.

West Virginia Museum

I love shoes...but how did the women fit their feet into these skinny things?

Sunday afternoon I visited the West Virginia Museum while waiting in for church to start that evening. I had been one time, but was there on a ‘business type’ trip and was unable to take in everything the museum had to offer.

Honestly, I hate museums. I would rather watch the History Channel and be schooled on the history of certain things than go to a museum where you have to read everything and try to take it in. This museum is an EXCEPTION though! It is as good, if not better, than the Smithsonian and I am just not saying that because I am Miss West Virginia.

I spent three hours reading all the history on West Virginia and educating myself on my great state. The museum starts from 1300BC with coal-like floors to present day. While you are on the path, there are Discover Rooms that will educate you more on that era and the hot topics going on during that time. The flooring and décor represents the era. So if you are walking through the 1800s, there are going to be horse shoes and boots in the flooring, while 1950 features a road, diner and train tracks.

It is worth spending an afternoon! Open Tuesday – Sunday at the Cultural Center beside the State Capitol.

Morgantown Pioneer Girls Church Group

Christine Langdon, now Christine Feathers, asked me to come and speak to her “Girls Charm Class" as well as the girls ages 5-13 at her church. The Charm Class is for girls in 6^th grade that are learning about your skin, appearance, reputation and being a woman of God. Christine truly is that kind of woman so 1)being her friend is a blessing, but 2) she is the most qualified teacher for this certain course.

The Charm Class girls and myself arrived at the church early to eat dinner together and chat. They had a few questions for me, but not as many as I expected from 12/13 year old girls. After that we all went into the fellowship hall where there were 60 girls waiting to make crafts and hear a talk from “Miss West Virginia.”

I talked to the girls for about 15 minutes about my faith, how being Miss West Virginia was part of God’s plan for me and that God has a plan for each one of them. We looked at five different scriptures that encompassed God’s desires for each of His to be a woman of God. After that I took a Q & A session and got every question from “Do you like boys?” to “Where do you live?” to “Do you wear your crown even when you sleep?”

Each of the girls made foam crowns and we all took pictures. This was a wonderful experience, and I hope during this year, I get more opportunities to talk to talk to girls/women about self worth in God’s eyes.

CASA Holiday Christmas Tree Auction - Jackson Co.

After a few appearances in Morgantown, I rushed home to attend and speak at the Jackson County CASA Holiday Christmas Tree Auction. This is a new event and fundraiser to CASA and celebrated its second year this year.

Each business and/or organization within Jackson County are asked to provide a decorated Christmas tree that will be auctioned off for a CASA – Court Appointed Special Advocate – fundraiser. There were about 12 trees donated from various different groups – Women’s Auxiliary Club, Fairplain Union Church, Habitat for Humanity, etc. One tree was adorned with ornaments and décor that supported the Marshall sporting teams, another supported the WVU sporting teams. Another tree was decorated in all blue items, while another was decorated in country gingerbread ornaments. Each tree was different and much thought and effort had obviously gone into them.

There were about 100 in attendance, and a women’s church choir sang as attendees snacked on some refreshments. I spoke about what CASA was, how my platform and position of Miss West Virginia ties into that, and what the fundraiser dollars would be used for. This was an emotional speech, as I cannot begin to imagine the horrors that the children served by CASA have endured. Our CASA volunteers give so much to these children, and they play a huge role in being a mentor to their particular children.

As the bidding began, it was obvious that folks had a favorite they were bound and determined to get. The highest bid was for the CASA tree. This tree was adorned in bronze/brown/gold ornaments and was absolutely gorgeous. My father, Circuit Judge Tom Evans who started CASA, purchased that tree at $460.00 for his office, after much ado!

Thousands of dollars were raised that evening and that money will go toward obtaining, promoting and providing more CASA volunteers in Jackson County. Thanks go to all who donated their time, energy and commitment to the community through this event - another great example of Jackson County spirit!

Miss Morgan Co. Scholarship Pageant

I had the best time this evening! I got to spend the night with WV Outstanding Teen’s Executive Director, Jen Gartin, and her husband Del. Although I did not know that Del was a truck driver~ I confessed my freakish love of runaway truck ramps to him and how before I died, I would like to see a truck go up one….even though I know that means they are out of control. "I just want to see if the sand and sticks really will hold the truck up there.” Stupid, I know, but the next time I go up to hide away at the Gartin residence, I get to go on a tractor trailer ride! After being fixed the World Best Morning Omelet by Del Gartin, I headed to the Hagerstown Prime Outlets for some shopping before my evening appearances. After leaving the Prime Outlets, I headed to Shepherdstown, WV for the Miss Grant County Scholarship Pageant, where I would be judging and providing entertainment.

The scholarship pageant had about 40 entries – ages 5-18 – and was put on by a 17 year old girl, Chelsea Hessler, who was only producing this pageant for her senior 4-H project. I couldn’t believe it! It was one of the best and most organized pageants I have ever been a part of. There were production numbers for each age group, commemorating Michael Jackson, and each group competed in four phases of competition – Introduction, Costume/Casual Wear, Evening Gown, On-Stage Interview. At the end, each participant received an award and the winners were crowned.

This was not a Miss America preliminary, but I feel it will soon become one. It was so well put together and promoted all of the right things. Each queen and runner-up received a crown, trophy, and a savings bond of a certain amount. This pageant did not promote beauty, but self-confidence – all the right things a pageant should be based upon.

Chelsea inspired me in many different ways. If she could, at 17, put together a pageant that hosted 40 contestants, gain the scholarship dollars, raise the money to purchase the trophies and crowns, choreograph four different production numbers, provide each girl with a T-shirt for the opening number, obtain the auditorium, decorate and find judges, the least I could do is try harder each day at being the best Miss West Virginia I know how to be. I started out my year with the quote and vision that “People are not going to remember how you looked, or what you said…they are going to remember how you made them feel.” That young lady made me feel inspired and that I could do anything I set my mind to…just like she did.

Country Charm Photoshoot

Tonya Rohrbaugh is one of the best photographers, with the BEST vision, that I have ever been able to work with. She was gacious enough to provide a photo session free of charge to the newly crowned Miss WV. Because of scheduling, we were unable to get together until November 13^th, but it was well worth the wait.

Since my senior year, I have had no pictures taken with my naturally curly hair. So because this was something that was deemed to be “fun” I decided to take the ‘natural route.’ Her ability to work with lighting and your best features is unlike any I have ever seen. She had awesome ideas, and I look forward to working with her on my wedding day…whenever that is....

Harrison Co. Channel 18 Interview

The Harrison County Chamber of Commerce hosts local Channel 18. Each week, month, there are various different programs and interviews being run consecutively. One week/month there might be a program ran about the local little league football teams, the next week/month there is something about the local Walmart’s holiday shopping traffic. The Chamber does its best to promote the businesses and organizations in Harrison County through public television awareness.

I had the wonderful opportunity to interview with one of the nicest gentlemen, representing the Harrison County Chamber of Commerce’s communications side. We talked on the set of Robert C. Byrd High School's Audiovisual Department for about 45 minutes on the opportunities provided to Miss West Virginia, my platform, preparation for Miss America and the Miss West Virginia Scholarship Organization.

Prior to the interview, I had been infected with the swine flu and cooped up in the house for a week. That was my first day feeling back to normal and able to be out of bed. So….after the interview, I exercised “retail therapy” and shopped that afternoon before meeting an old pageant friend for dinner.

Upshur County Schools

During the first week of November, I had the opportunity to visit nine different schools and one church in Upshur County, West Virginia: Hodgesville Elementary, Washington District Elementary, Union Elementary, Rock Cave, French Creek, Buckhannon Elementary, West Virginia Weselyan College and Buckhannon Upshur High School. All the students were fantastic and so well behaved.

In each school I received the normal questions, but I did get asked to go to the school ball that was taking place that Friday afternoon with one of the 5^th grade boys - probably was the best offer I'd had all week!

Union Elementary finished up my last school presentation. When I arrived, there were two newspapers there and two TV crews ready to capture a story. I had never felt like a celebrity until that day! After the various interviews, the school assembled for the presentation and we have K-5 in the gymnasium. The presentation went WONDERFULLY, and after I was finished I was even offered a job teaching at the school when I completed my reign of service. I laughed….as I have never really seen myself as a teacher….but had a great time with my presentation that day.

During that week I was granted the opportunity to speak to a classroom of students at West Virginia Weselyan College. This was a class full of future educators, so I explained what the job of Miss West Virginia was, my platform, and how to look out for signs of abuse and neglect within your future students. It was exciting to meet some inspiring students who have great plans for their future, and I hope to continue my relationship with them beyond my year as Miss West Virginia, as they're going places!

Lastly, one of the best things about this week on the road was that I was able to stay in a bed and breakfast that was HUGE! I had my own room, living room, kitchen and bathroom. The décor reflected the Victorian era and was a home of serenity for me that week. Check it out – The Governor’s Inn:

After speaking at the Supreme Court Child Abuse & Neglect training this summer, I was asked to speak and sing at the HOPE Candlelight Ceremony. HOPE is a domestic violence and sexual assault home in Fairmont, WV. The candlelight ceremony took place at Fairmont State University and was in remembrance of those who have suffered from either domestic violence or sexual assault.

I sang “With a Broken Wing” by Martina McBride and spoke for about 10 minutes concerning how my platform – Child Abuse & Neglect – was closely tied to domestic violence. Also talked about not letting one event or one life struggle define who you are going to be. After the speech a few individuals came up to me and said they really needed to hear that and I even recruited one volunteer for CASA. Great evening!

University of Charleston Homecoming

Saturday was spent at my old ‘stomping grounds.’ My college years were spent at the University of Charleston and the Homecoming Game was taking place on Saturday and they wanted one of the alumni to sing the National Anthem and visit with the attendees. I was selected [smile] so the afternoon was spent in the skybox watching the game, visiting with old friends, and autographing various different items. It felt so good to be ‘home’ and to promote the university that was so gracious to me!

Mary Kay Party & Fundraiser

During my years of competition in the Miss West Virginia Scholarship Organization, I always received a gift certificate to order Mary Kay Makeup. Alicia Fancher was the consultant and I guess you could say over the years we have created somewhat of a business friendship.

Early on in my year as Miss West Virginia I was asked by Alicia to do a fundraiser with Mary Kay. I was super stoked and we then worked from there to find a date that would work best for the both of us. By that time RDVIC – Rape and Domestic Violence Information Center – was going to be the benefiting non-profit organization.

Monday around 60 women were able to take part in Mary Kay makeovers as well as hear a little information about the RDVIC and the life of Miss WV. I was given the opportunity to speak for 30 minutes and honestly I feel it was one of my best speeches yet. I think there is something about being a woman and talking to women, but who doesn’t like to talk about makeup, life, obstacles, and relationships?

A few Miss WV girls were in attendance as well and it is always great to reunite – Megan Otte, Maggie Power, Cori Langdon, and Christine Feathers. It was a great evening spent laughing about old times, getting new makeup advice, and trying out some of the GREAT Mary Kay products.

Boone Co. Schools

Friday was spent in Boone Co. visiting both Sherman High School and the Junior High School. The high school presentation was awesome! The entire high school filled into the gymnasium and I was introduced by the Student Body President.

This was a fancy presentation and I almost felt under dressed. I had on a sequined top and jeans that matched it with rhinestone in the right areas, but the Student Body President had on a skirt, tights, heels and a cute top. They also had the Sherman High School podium for me to speak behind.

I only had to call the class down once but other than that, 99% of the students were very attentive and seemed interested. After the presentation, I was offered a job teaching at Sherman High School…but still not sure that is a position for me.

Sherman Junior High was FANTASTIC! They had all the kids file into the gym and then called me in. They were ecstatic and listened/participated so well. They were probably my favorite middle school so far because we did about a 35minute Q&A afterward.

There questions were interesting, but not as cute as the elementary questions…more adult like, which was great! My dad was able to attend both schools with me. So that was a nice surprise to the day and we were able to catch up.

Nicholas Co. Schools

This week I have been in Nicholas Co. visiting various schools. Monday afternoon I had an encounter with “Zipper Mouth” – a 5 year old boy that loved to ask questions in the middle of the presentation that didn’t have anything to do with what we were talking about, But…he was very polite. He would raise his hand about every other minute or so and keep his hand up till he was called on. After the presentation was over and we took a school picture, I had to get one with “Zipper Mouth” because he was so adorable I would have taken him home!

The craziest questions I got this week were:

"Where is your limo? We saw a black car pull in, but if that is what you are driving then you really aren’t Miss WV!"

"How many times have you been divorced?"

"Did you brush your teeth this morning like I did?"

"Can I buy your crown from you? I have a lot of Halloween money saved up!"

You gotta love kids! I had a blast living in the Hampton Inn this week. It was a home away from home and the kids were always something to look forward to the next day.
